Down in the village

Watercolor 8x10
copyrighted 2013
Nita Leger Casey
I painted this during the week but just getting to post it now, this was a scene from my recent trip to France, I just wanted to capture this great light, that got my attention while I was at this village visiting a castle above this little town, and the scene called for a watercolor .
Today was a bad day for me, my beautiful hens that I have painted a few times ,well this morning  a predator  killed them ,we think a fox my neighbor thinks a hawk ,not sure? I feel so bad for my little rooster who survived and now is all alone, he did put out a fight ,feathers all over the place.

The Chateau de l'etang

pastel 9x12,copyrighted 2013
Nita Leger Casey
Snowing again! but I used the day to be productive and paint at the studios ,my friend Paula asked me to stayed and paint at her studio with Peggy ,it was a perfect day for the company! we talked while painting, I decided on this subject, the first house Tim and I lived at when we got married in France. Today was our anniversary, so I went down memory lane talking about living there in this small chateau ,this was the back of it ,the front was more elaborate ,and the landlord lived downstairs,we also had our first child there. During my last visit I stopped there,it is now an art center, it was converted like thirty years ago .

Coming in the village

pastel 9x12, copyrighted 2013
Nita Leger Casey
I am back! I was in France for ten days with all attentions of painting and blogging, but it did not happen,I visited with my family and had a wonderful time, I visited with 26 relatives and 15 friends, lots of catching up on a few years not being there, some friends were from my school days so it was a lot of years! the weather was not the greatest, but managed to still take a lot of photos to work from.We had snow a couple of the days ,it had been so many years since I had experienced snow there, I am used to it living in New England but it was still nice to see the difference in the landscape. A lot of wonderful meals not weight watchers and I enjoyed every bit of it .
So today was my first day going to my studio to painting this scene, just a simple village! just liked the way the sun was hitting the buildings .

L'Ancienne Hotel du Midi

Watercolor by
Nita Leger Casey ,copyrighted 2011
Thinking about France made me look at some of my old photos, this is a hotel that my Aunt owned in the town of Checy, it was called L'hotel du Midi , I probably could write a book about it, a lot of Family history happened there, weddings, religious events, births and funerals the family would gathered  at the hotel after, I have just about every relatives photos in front of this old hotel even  during World War two as well , the name is changed now, but the memories live on .
This was from a photo I took about 4 years ago  now called Bar de la Diligence .
If you have a photo of a place that you would like to have  a painting for  memories ,

Galette des Rois
Watercolor 5x7 , copyrighted2011
Nita Leger Casey
I couldn't eat the Galette I made this morning so I decided to paint it instead , it's not I didn't like it but just started a diet and I am trying to stick to it , not easy ! i did have a sliver to make sure it tasted good when I gave Tim a slice with his coffee , he said it tasted just like in France , so I think I did good. It all started yesterday when I posted on Facebook about the Galette des rois a traditional Epiphany cake we eat the Sunday after new years , actually it had come to my mind when I called my Sister in France earlier in the day and asked her if she was going to eat some, thinking of our home tradition . My friends all commented on it my kids also ,so this morning I got up and made it , to my surprise it came out nice, in France we buy it from the patisserie.

Le chateau de Chenonceaux , copyrighted 2009
watercolor 5x7 sold
I was raised in the Loire valley where all the Castles are located , I grew up visiting all of them a few times a year , if not with my family, it was the school trips for cultural exposure , I was not crazy about them then , they used to smell old and mildew, heavy wax, but when you are a kid you don't appreciate the beauty and history they all had , we had so many I was not that impressed , one of my uncle was even a Inn keeper of one , our first year of married life was a three room apartment in the second floor of one . We left France to come to the US ,and when I returned to France a few years later, they looked so different , and I fell in love again with the rich history and architecture of my own backyard . So When my children were small we visited the castles again and again also , this one was a favorite of them ,because they was an Animal zoo in the gardens .

"La route de chabris "
Watercolor ,5x7 copyrighted 2009
Well, we had our day with the self portraits , It was actually fun to see everyone on Daily Painters .
I must say today was a dreary day , it snowed, iced, rain all day ,I just hope we don't get a repeat of the December storm during the night , the trees are full of ice again!
This is my work for today , a watercolor of French series I do ounce in awhile , this was the village next to my mother's house , my kids used to love to go there to the open market and the newspaper store , their Grand mother used to give them francs to buy candies , in the spring it has this wisteria all over , I should call it Wisteria lane .
Email me nlcasey@charter.net if you are interested, the watercolor is matted to an 8x10 acid free matt

The holidays are over and it is back to work , so I decided to start with a few watercolors ,I love the medium , a few years back that's all I was using , I guess I go back and forth . I was in many competition local and National ,received awards and all , but trends dictate of what we should paint , so I returned to oils and pastels , but i still like a nice watercolor ,nicely matted and framed ,they are a gem!
