First day of fall today!where did the summer go? I do love fall because living in New England it is definitely a treat to see the trees changing daily, I know I will find beautiful landscapes to paint and probably not enough time to paint them all. So for now I still will be posting a few from my summer in Maine .This one was on Campobello Island, my friend and I sat on the edge of this cliff to capture this scene and enjoying the boats going by has we were painting.

Birthday Bouquet

Nita Leger Casey
8x10 Watercolor (c)2012
I have just come back from a very nice week end at our simple little cabin in the woods of Maine, a place we have been going for thirty years this month, a place where I can paint and relax in the middle of nature at it's best! this week end was special because it was my birthday, I did spend a wonderful lunch with my best friend Tammy with a little shopping in Farmington, later back to the cabin where my friends at the pond came trough the woods with flashlights and birthday hats on and a cake in hands , sure was the nicest birthday I had in a long time it was so simple and so touching to have friends come together and surprise me. My friend Judi had given me this little bouquet from her  secret garden, so cute !I had to paint it also was more meaningful than a store bought bouquet.
Simple things in life means so much more !

Small island at Bailey's mistake

  watercolor sketch of the Island , 8x10 (c) 2012
Nita Leger Casey
Yesterday I posted a path going to a small island, here it is! at low tide you are able to access this small jewel in the bay of Fundy, a beautiful cove called Bailey's mistake,I have done it before in a previous year, it's not that easy! a few of my friends did venture and painted there this year, you just have to make sure you come back before the tide or you are there for a long while.  The chances we take when we paint plein air! but what fun it is.
This was done as a quick watercolor  vignette on an acrylic paper alsmost a canvas like, gives a different affect.

Two sketches from Pemaquid retreat

Sketches ,pen and ink with watercolor (c)2012
Nita Leger Casey
Just came back from a wonderful retreat with the Pastel Painters of Maine The weather beautiful for half the time there, gave me plenty time to paint two paintings and a few sketches , the rest of the time we are lucky to have a great carriage house who serves as a great big studio,we had two critiques and a great demonstration from a Maine artist Caren Michel, lots of socializing, suppers at a small restaurant right on the edge of the ocean. Sunday the weather did turn to the worst and was not able to make our planed trip to the Island of Mounhegan ,so my friend and I drove back with some heavy rain, all and all it was a great week end retreat.

Market street,Lowell MA

watercolor 8x10 (c) 2012 .
I had a nice week end in Maine relaxing and sketching and also worked on this watercolor for my solo show in November. What I liked in this scene was the nice sunny day with the strong shadows across the road, I think I captured what I felt that day. The downtown of this old mill town  has  made a comeback with nice restaurants and gifts shops,it has a lot of history and the town welcomes many  visitors, interesting tours of old mills and museums are offered. My goal for this show is to capture some of the best of Lowell. Having a studio at Western Avenue has opened my eyes on some of the local scene.

Cottage by the sea

5x7 pastel on board  (c)2012
Nita Leger Casey
Yesterday with full of energy and a must clean the house,  this type of work is getting the least of my favorite things to do as I get older, I remember when we lived in Italy I was so proud of cleaning every day waxing all my marble floors, dusting and waxing all the furniture, now the house gets a deep cleaning when someone comes over to stay or when I can't stand it anymore, anyway in the afternoon I got  tired if this boring job and decided to paint this little pastel.
Oh another good news I heard this Saturday while at the plant sale at our local Library, A mother of a past student was so happy to tell me that her daughter who I had for many years as an  art Student is now the Deputy Director of textile design for Martha Stewart, I was so happy to hear this, it was the best reward ever to hear of of your student has done so well, better than a prize for myself .
Before I became a daily painter I had a small art program at my house every day for over twenty years , many of my students have done wery well, so proud of them !
This painting is for sale $100.00 shipped ,email me nlcasey@charter.net

Hagerstown, Maryland

Watercolor 5x7,(c)2012
Just took a five day trip to visit our kids in Maryland, it was nice to see them and have Mother's day there, the highlight of the trip was really to watch our two grandsons play baseball, both are very good and proud of their game !
The town of Hagerstown is very nice,I love the downtown area ,a nice old fashion town with beautiful architecture , art center playhouse lots of new restaurant ,we ate at the Rhubarb House restaurant, very nice! great food and atmosphere. We have been going to the area for about 14 years and the town has grown on the outside with malls and housing area like mad, the downtown has the character I love in a American town, and great for an artist to paint. Also very friendly!
This watercolor is available ,email me if interested .nlcasey@charter.net
