After a week or more not painting I was dying to go to my Studio and make a painting , of a scene I  have been wanting to do for awhile, I have painted this neighborhood before in a watercolor, not the exact location, but this is a great place to paint,  a lot of the houses are from the 1700 .I really love this town of Portsmouth NH .

To all my followers,I am still here! these past couple months I have been very busy working for a show I am having at the loading Dock gallery in Lowell,MA.  All the paintings are larger work then small daily paintings so I  was reluctant to post them on my blog, but here is one of an old Sardine factory in  Lubec Maine ,a place I  have gone painting for many years.
 This month I am in the LDG gallery in Lowell with a dozen paintings, I also have three paintings at the Whistler Museum of art in Lowell,Ma.  I also have a painting in Portsmouth NH at The New Hampshire art association  with the Pastel painters of Maine . For over twenty years, My friend and I drove to Lubec,Maine every summers  rented a farm house and painted there for two weeks. We got to know the town very well and it's wonderful people who live there. We got to paint all the back roads, fishing spot, boats and lobster shacks, including all the lighthouses and wonderful State parks. last year I didn't get to go,and really missed it. I am hoping to make a short trip there this year!

Busy square in Portsmouth

From the Southern Street scenes to the North, here is another street scene in New Hampshire in the lovely town of Portsmouth , a place I love to walk and admire the little shops and have coffee at our favorite place on the square, part of  our Sunday rides. Portsmouth has so much history, you can find houses from the early 1700 still lived in , one of the oldest port I believe. It also has beautiful galleries and restaurants. Sunset hill Inn golf house

Last month my friends and I had gone painting in the White mountains, this year being a strange Winter, we went with all intentions to paint snow, but all we found was dormant grass that would turned gold with an Alpine glow in the evening and this was the golf course in front of the Inn, I had gone previous years and painted this same scene with lost of snow! A popular French breed of cows, while in France in November, I stopped and took pictures of some.They are a very soft off white color, I have not seen any in New England, I am sure some farm have them, but not seen with my own eyes . If you come to my atelier, you will see many different cows, I love to hear the visitors talk about them ,great conversations! we have open studios this Saturday! noon to 5 , I am on the 4 th floor 407A

My friends and I had a wonderful two days Plein Air painting up in the White Mountains of NH. We didn't have snow but the scenery was just beautiful, the company was great! when you get six artists together who have the same interest ,paint, paint and more paint ....and we did, non stop! the first day was warm weather perfect for Plein air, the second was a rain storm, but nothing stopped us, the accommodations at the Inn is perfect, we could paint from inside with the view of Mt Lafayette under the clouds. In the evening we found a couple restaurants that accommodated our taste for the local culinary.

I didn't paint today, I really wanted too but other commitment that comes in your life and sometimes you have to take a break like going to church to say good bye to a  dear friend who lost her battle with cancer. Then it made me think of Maine and missing the beautiful sky by our place where we have a cabin ,when we close in October ,I  know it will be six months before I see it again, so it is something to look for, we are half way there!

I am an a Irish mode right now! I was there last Spring ,and really wanted to do more scenes from there,the year just flew by as usual! Maine Rocks.

I had a pastel board with a no so good painting from a couple years ago, so I decided to add some texture to it with some Gesso and grounds for pastel, when it dried I could see rocks. Being so familiar with those rocks ,that is what I painted !
 Also today I started a larger painting at my Atelier, a full  pastel sheet of a house I have admired for years in Pemaquid , exited to go back tomorrow and finish it .

 About five years ago I went painting with a group, it was called Snow Camp ! Stapelton Kearns was our teacher, and believe me it was cold 14 below 0, I did couple oils from that location on Sugar Hill. It was great fun and a big challenge not to freeze to death! So this morning I was looking at the painting that was done on location and decided to paint it again ,in a small format and different medium. When I came back, I remember everyone saying did you paint freeze? FYI oil paint does not freeze!

I worked from a photo I took a few years ago, my friend and I had gone to Keene,NH early in the morning when we came upon this fog lifting from a bog. The best time to take really nice photos is early in the morning and at sun down with it's long shadows . I have so many reference photos to work from because I believe what ever I paint, I must have experienced that scene with my own eyes, and that is what I feel it's an original for me.   I went to my Atelier today, just to get back in the routine after the Holidays, it's like you forget what project you were working on! so decided to start cleaning my pastel with some cornmeal, it works like a charm!   I had these beautiful colors cleaned and I looked around at an oil I had painted on location before, then I decided I would do it in Pastel, I was happy with the result!

Here is my second small painting of the year, my husband and I drove there to this cute Village  the week before Christmas. Cape Porpoise is located On route 9 pass Kennebunkport , I think it is part of the town. I  have always liked this small village with a couple restaurants and Galleries. I decided to do it in watercolor, for the past year I have neglected my watercolors, I have used it but mostly for commission work where I do a lot of details ,but my goal is to stay loose for these small post card size. email me if you are interested , nlcasey@charter.net
